Created to celebrate the automaker's 60th Anniversary in the North American market, the 2015 Ferrari F60 America debuted this weekend at an event in Beverly Hills. Based on Ferrari's F12 Berlinetta, this scintillating roadster retains the F12's front-mid mounted 652-horsepower/6.3-liter V12 engine and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission - a combo that lets it streak from 0-62 mph in 3.1 seconds - but gets a major cosmetic makeover in the transition from coupe to roadster.
Ferrari will build only 10 examples of the F60 America for the U.S. paying homage to the 1967 Ferrari 275 GTS4 NART (North American Racing Team) Spider, an ultra-rare model which also was limited to just 10 vehicles. That open-air version of the 275 GTB4 was a car Enzo Ferrari agreed to create specifically for buyers here at the request of then-U.S. importer, Luigi Chinetti. Like those cars, all of the new F60 America Spiders will be finished in NART livery - the traditional U.S. racing colors of blue with a white stripe - and crowned with "a light fabric top" that Ferrari states is "usable at speeds up to 75 mph" beyond which we assume it will simply auto-depart its mooring. Prominent 60th Anniversary Prancing Horse badges also adorn the F60 America's front fenders.
The F60 America's exterior remake cranks the F12's boldness up a notch or two. Aggressive front and rear fascias give an edge to the basic body contours while redrawn doors and fenders complement the look and are set off by two carbon fiber-trimmed buttresses extending back from the leather-trimmed fixed roll hoops. Inside, the F60 America pays further tribute to competition heritage with loads of bespoke carbon fiber trim and an asymmetrical cockpit design that pairs a racing-style driver's seat wrapped in hot red leather with a black-trimmed passenger perch. No official word yet on pricing, but each Ferrari F60 America is rumored to cost about $2.5 million.
