VW to Debut New Crossover Concept in Detroit

A new Volkswagen concept for a crossover model will have its world premiere at the 2015 Detroit auto show next month.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, two company sources told Reuters on Monday that the study will be a five-seat variant of their upcoming seven-seat SUV that VW confirmed for production at the end of 2016 at its Chattanooga plant.

Without giving any other specific details, the same sources said that the concept crossover "is likely to be approved for production by 2016-17" and is part of VW's plans to increase its SUV / Crossover range in North America where it currently offers only two models, the Tiguan and Touareg.

We already know that the mid-size, seven-seater SUV will be based on the 2013 CrossBlue Concept. It all so happens that in the same year, VW presented a sportier-looking, five-seater study called the CrossBlue Coupe Concept at the Shanghai auto show. Both concept models are built on VW's versatile MQB platform.

Naturally, this raises the question of whether VW's 2015 Detroit show could be a…re-painted twin or perhaps a modified version of the CrossBlue Coupe Concept.
