Before the McLaren F1 and Ferrari F40 were around, some gentlemen in Stuttgart came up with then's most technologically advanced car. This Porsche was conceived with Group B rallying in mind, the reason why it spawned just 337 road-going examples.

When it was introduced in 1986, the Porsche 959 was so complex and potent, it became the world's fastest street-legal production car thanks to its incredible 2,847 cc bi-turbocharged flat-6 boxer powerplant, mated to a six-speed manual - the 1,450 kg (3,200 lbs) 911-like bruiser is able to top at 314 km/h (197 mph).

Even though today's hypercar royalty like the Bugatti Veyron and Koenigsegg One:1 are in classes well beyond that of the Porsche 959, this fellow right here was one of the originals, one that paved the way, the Porsche that gave the 911 its Carrera 4 and Carrera 4 S all-wheel drive goodness starting with the 964-gen.

Without the 959, the 560 hp Porsche 911 Turbo S like the one we tested wouldn't have happened

See the 959 in the photo gallery below? It was driven just 16,500 kilometers (roughly 10,000 miles) and looks pristine. Currently on sale by Massachusetts-based auto boutique Copley Motorcars, the 1987 model right here is, as its seller advertises it, exceptional in all respects. But would you pay a whopping $1,45 million of your hard earned green dollar bills for it considering it cost $227,000 when it was new?

After all, its 3.7-second 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is on par with a Porsche Panamera Turbo, but it's also way slower than the Nissan GT-R and other sub $150k production cars made to accelerate like a stabbed rat...
