Official: 2016 Cadillac ELR
The 2016 Cadillac ELR has just been introduced with the new car bringing with it a selection of changes over previous iterations of the uniquely designed luxury coupe.
For starters, the new 2016 Cadillac ELR now features a more potent hybrid powertrain which sends it to 96 km/h from a standstill in a mere 6.4 seconds which is a 1.5 second improvement over the outgoing car. The hybrid unit combines a 1.4-litre petrol engine with the battery pack sending 373 lb-ft of additional torque to the electric motor. The implementation of a revised Sport mode also contributes to the swifter acceleration.
The battery pack of the 2016 Cadillac ELR is found along the vehicle’s centreline and positioned between the front and rear wheels to provide the best possible weight distribution. In pure electric mode, the 2016 ELR can travel 60 km with the hybrid accepting charge from 120 volt and 240 volt power sources. When connected to 240V power, it takes five hours to be fully recharged.
Elsewhere, extensive upgrades have been employed for the vehicle’s suspension systems. For example, a stiffer rear axle has been installed alongside increase front spring rates and stiffer bushings for the front lower control arms, cradle mounts of Watts link at the rear. Additionally, the Continuous Damping Control system has been revised while a Performance Package is now also offered to customers.
Braking power is provided by four-piston Brembo calipers at the front which clamp down on 13.6 inch rotors while small 12.4-inch rotors are found at the rear. The upgraded brakes means the 2016 ELR stops 12 per cent faster from 96 km/h than it previously did.
Discussing the upgraded car, Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen said “ELR’s combination of leading technology with stunningly attractive design is unlike any other coupe in the luxury segment. The upgraded ELR offers enhanced driving performance for buyers seeking uncompromising luxury and exquisite craftsmanship with electrification technology. It is unique in the luxury category, in that it completely eliminates conventional concerns over driving range, which has been the Achilles’ heel of other competitors in the luxury segment.”
