It's got some miles, but it's in fantastic shape.
When it first debuted at the 1966 Turin Auto Show, the (original)
Maserati Ghibli
was an instant hit. The car was as stylish and powerful as the other
great Italian gran turismos of the day, but it was roomier and offered
generous luggage space, making more practical for actual touring. This
one in particular, one of only 125 units of the convertible ever
produced, was used right from the start for touring purposes by its
first owner, a wealthy American.
He had the option to have the car shipped to his home
in Florida, but he instead chose to pick it up from the factory in
Italy, setting off with it from there to a home he owned in Ireland. The
car stayed there for a couple of years before being shipped to New
York, and again taken on the road for the rest of the trip to Florida.
The Ghibli has a 4.7-liter V8 that produces 330 horsepower, and was
fully restored during the Nineties. All of that touring translates to a
total of 47,000 miles on the clock, but being so rare, it is still very
valuable. It will be going up or auction next month and is expected to
go for as much as $900,000.
