The new Ford GT has changed colour, arriving in stunning Liquid Silver for the Chicage Motor Show in Illinois after its show-stopper unveiling in Liquid Blue at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
While the silver highlights the sharpness of the sleek lines, broad dark stripes are a reminder of the styling for the marque’s historic GT40 victory at Le Mans in 1966, and a signal for future intentions.
After the Detroit reveal, Ford confessed that it benchmarked this third-generation Ford GT against the Ferrari 458 Speciale and its second generation Ford GT from a decade ago. Set to be released as a 2017 model, Ford is now beginning development in earnest and has confirmed that the new GT delivers more than 600 hp with its 3.5-litre twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine putting out power in line with the Ferrari 458 Speciale’s non-turbo 4.5-litre V8.
The new Ford GT’s engine has dual fuel-injection as well as a low-friction valvetrain and is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle transmission. Underpinning the 2016 Ford GT is a carbon fibre monocoque with aluminium front and rear subframes. Carbon fibre has also been used for the body panels and claims “one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any production car”.
At the rear, the large spoiler sits above the central pair of huge tailpipes which are nearly as large as the circular rear light clusters, above the purposeful large diffuser.
