This
year the eccentric Swiss automaker Rinspeed has revealed their Geneva
Motor Show concept a bit sooner than usual, probably because you need
more time to understand the thing. It’s called Rinspeed Etos and it’s an
autonomous concept based on the BMW i8.
The Rinspeed Etos (which is actually
written ?tos) looks surprisingly ordinary at first glance, but it is
anything but. I mean, it does look futuristic and all, but mostly it
looks like a revised BMW i8 in yellow. Under the skin however, the Etos
is a veritable Silicon Valley on wheels. There is a mind-boggling number
of technologies packed in this car, some of them could be seen in
normal production cars in a few years.
So without any further ado, let’s dig in
and see what are the highlights of this crazy Etos. The coolest feature,
perhaps, is a folding and retracting steering wheel from ZF TRW for a
clutter-free self-driving experience. Then there are the two curved
21.5-inch Ultra HD widescreen monitors, Harman Connected Car
technologies infotainment, eight HD exterior for a 180-degree view of
the outside world, real 3D navigation, gaze-tracking system, 20-inch
Borbet GTX aluminum rims, Gorilla glass and…
One feature of Rinspeed Etos that sounds
like a bit of an overkill is an on-board DJI drone complete with landing
platform in the rear. Now, it’s a cool thing to have a drone on the
back of your car, but Rinspeed is kind of struggling to find a real use
for this thing. That’s why they mention “shooting a selfie of the car on
the road” as the drone’s primary function.
