Ford's new 350 hp super-hatch is already being lauded as a game-changer, offering performance previous unseen in the segment at a sub-$40,000 price tag.
Based on the number of pre-orders alone, it seems inevitable that the new Focus RS will be a massive success.
Even Ford, though, couldn't have expected one to sell for more than a Lamborghini Aventador at an auction over the weekend.
Crossing the auction block at Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale event, one 2016 Focus RS sold for a extraordinary $550,000. Given that customer deliveries have yet to commence, the buyer is believed to have secured a spot for an early example, although the auction house hasn't announced if the model sold will be the first off the production line.
All funds raised from the auction will benefit the JDRC charity aiming at curing Type 1 diabetes, so the sale is also a sizeable charitable donation than someone simply paying over $500k for the latest RS-badged model.
