Fifty
years ago Ford, Shelby and Hertz came up with this idea to create a
race car that could be rented by anybody through Hertz’s car hire
network. The result was the famed ShelbyHertz GT350-H. Now as a tribute
to that model, and also to test the current market for such an offer,
they have teamed up once again and came up with the 2017 Shelby GT-H.
A total of 140 Shelby GT-H will be
available for rent through the Hertz Adrenaline Collection at select
airport locations in the continental United States beginning from
Memorial Day weekend. It’s called “Rent-A-Racer” program, but don’t get
too excited. GT-H is not really a race car. What it is, is a nicely
tricked-out Mustang GT.
As with the original, what attracts
customers to Shelby GT-H is the way it looks. The car comes with a full
host of extra features, including black exterior paint with gold racing
stripes, Shelby-designed vented hood, carbon fiber front splitter and
rear spoiler, special badges, 19-inch aluminum wheels wearing high
performance Michelin rubber, and GT-H logos on the headrestraint, sill
plates and floor mats.
Performance-wise, the GT-H gets a
cat-back performance exhaust from Ford Performance and Ford Racing
Handling Pack, including special-tuned dampers, lowering springs, sway
bars and a staggered wheel kit. That is about as far as mods go, so the
5.0 liter V8 engine is pretty much stock.
