The 2016 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe
will go on sale in Australia from a starting price of $65,900 for the
C200 and top out at $162,400 for the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe.
Arriving two years after the introduction of the
sales-leading C-Class sedan and wagon, the coupe variants will bolster
the C-Class range, so that it can better contest with the more complete BMW 3 and 4 Series ranges. C-Class convertible models will follow in December.
The C205 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe measure 95mm longer, 40mm wider
and 1mm shorter in height than its 4686/1810/1442mm sedan sibling. The
bonnet is an extra 40mm longer, while the smaller rear seats have
allowed for 8mm more headroom at the front (same legroom) 28mm
more elbow room.
The Coupe models gain frameless doors and the diamond grille that
adorns other sporting Mercedes-Benz models. In comparison to the sedan,
all Coupe variants pick up auto belt feeders, new driver assistance
systems (collision prevention plus with blind spot monitoring), LED
headlamps and nine airbags (sedan has eight). AirMatic suspension
remains an option.
As with the sedan, all standard petrol Class Coupe models are offered with a seven-speed ‘7G-Tronic Plus’ transmission.
The base C200 Coupe costs $5000 more than the sedan
model at $65,900. But, while it loses two doors, it gains the exterior
AMG Line, 18” AMG wheels, Artico dashboard, auto belt feeders, black ash
wood trim, memory seats and a 360 bird’s-eye-view camera. Additional
standard features include active park assist and LED Headlamps, DAB+
radio and satellite navigation as standard.
The C200 coupe is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder
engine that produces 135kW of power and 300Nm of torque. Mercedes-Benz
claims fuel economy figures of 6.0L/100km (under the 7.0L luxury car tax
threshold) and a 0-100km/h time of 7.3 seconds.
The only diesel offering in the range is the C250d coupe,
which starts from $74,900 but gains the benefit of a nine-speed
transmission, 19-inch AMG wheels, privacy glass, leather upholstery, and
keyless entry with hands free access.
Like the C250d sedan, the coupe is powered by a 2.1-litre
turbocharged four-cylinder Euro 6 emissions-compliant diesel engine with
150kW of power and a massive 500Nm of torque. Mercedes-Benz claims a
very low 4.4L/100km of fuel usage with a 0-100km/h time of just 6.7
seconds. It gains the same specification of equipment over the C200 as
its sedan sibling.
Next in line is the $83,400 Mercedes-Benz C300 Coupe,
which is not available in sedan form (complemented instead with the
$68,900 C250 petrol sedan). It uses a higher tune of the same petrol
engine in the C200 coupe, producing 180kW of power and 370Nm of torque.
It will do 0-100 in six seconds flat while using a claimed 6.6L of fuel
per 100km. In addition to the bigger 19-inch wheels and privacy glass,
the C300 also gains a sports exhaust system, Mercedes Comand online
infotainment (online connectivity) and a Burmester surround sound
system.
To top the C-Class Coupe range, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Coupe will set a top-line price of $162,400, $7890 more than the four-door version.
The coupe will ride on 19-inch front, 20-inch rear wheels and gain
the AMG engine mounts, performance exhaust and electronic differential.
The wider track for the rear of the coupe allows the larger wheel
fitment (like the Mercedes-AMG GT S), whereas the C63 sedan model is not
available with 19/20-inch wheel configuration.
Mercedes-AMG offers the larger wheel configuration in overseas
markets as an option, however Mercedes-Benz Australia made the decision
to carry it as standard equipment to properly emphasise the sporty
nature of the AMG Coupe.
Power is provided by the same 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine found in the
sedan. With 375kW of power and 700Nm of torque, the coupe goes from
0-100km/ in 3.9 seconds (0.1 seconds quicker than the sedan) with a
claimed fuel economy of 8.7L/100km.
Additional features of the C 63 AMG coupe include AMG seats with
heating, digital TV, head-up display, Nappa upholstery and panoramic
sunroof.
Likely to be a popular option for early buyers will be the $10,900
Edition 1 Package, which consists of yellow decals, an aerodynamics
package, ceramic brakes (front) and selenite grey magno paint. A
well-priced option, considering the cost of ceramic brakes on
performance cars are usually in five figures by themselves.
