We
can’t remember when was the last time BMW actually paid attention to the
F80 3 Series sedan, but the lowly family car is now getting some love
in form of a new plug-in hybrid drive variant. The 2017 BMW 330e
iPerformance covers a lot of bases and is expected to become a hit.
The only thing that could potentially
hinder BMW 330e iPerformance from selling big numbers is the price tag,
which is $44,695. That’s a lot for a 3er, but then again, the car has
some sweet specs. The 330e is powered by an advanced plug-in hybrid
drive system consisting of BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder and an
e-drive electric motor backed by a lithium-ion battery.
The total output of this system is an
excellent 248 hp and peak torque of 310 lb-ft. That power enables BMW
330e iPerformance to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and
reach a top speed of 140 mph. What’s more, the car has the ability to
cruise around for 14 miles on electric power alone during which time it
can hit 75 mph. The coolest thing is though, you lose none of the 3
series innate sportiness. The car is still rear-wheel-drive and has an
eight-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission with shift paddles
and SPORT and SPORT+ modes.
That said, the main focus with the
iPerformance model has been on economy. As such, the car comes with BMW
EfficientDynamics features to improve that, namely the Real Time Traffic
Information (RTTI) and Proactive Driving Assistant which utilize BMW
ConnectedDrive technology. The 330e also comes with a BMW i Wallbox
Level II 240V charger which can replenish the batteries in just two
hours and 30 minutes.
