So you want a Fiat 500 but you don’t want the poppy, stroppy Abarth model? The 2016 Fiat 500S is the car for you.
This new, sportier-looking version of the 2016 Fiat 500 debuted at the Geneva motor show, bringing with it a revamped exterior and revised interior which, according to the brand, is “unmistakably 500 and even more attractive”.
The 500S gets a sportier front bumper and grille, a new-look rear bumper and a set of side skirts, as well as 15-inch wheels as standard, while a set of small-by-today’s-standards-but-massive-on-a-Fiat-500 16-inch wheels finished in matte black are also available (pictured above).
It’s the little highlights that really make the 500S look different to the regular range, though, including “Satin Graphite” paint on the door handles, mirrors, wheel rims and tailgate garnish.
There are two new colours to help the silver highlights pop – the Metallic Azure blue you see above, and matte Alpine Green (seen at the top of the page).
Inside, the cockpit sees black seats and a black roof-lining, while there are stylish highlights around the cabin – including on the door panels and seat edges – in blue, white or yellow. It gets a new sporty steering wheel, too, and the Satin Graphite gets another run across the dashboard.
Following on from the 2016 update of the Fiat 500, there’s a 7.0-inch media screen as standard, and it has satellite navigation, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, and can be had with phone mirroring technology to allow the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces to pop up on screen.
There’s a sound system from Beats by Dr. Dre, too, with six speakers and sub-woofer and 440 watts of output.
The show car has a 1.3-litre Multijet turbo diesel engine, which claims 0-100km/g in a not-so-sporty 10.7 seconds, but it uses just 3.4 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, according to Fiat.
It appears very likely that the 2016 Fiat 500S will form a part of the updated Fiat 500 range, which debuted here just a few weeks back.
The first models launched were the Pop and Lounge variants, but according to Lucy McLellan, director of corporate communications for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Australia, there’s scope for more.
“We definitely see some opportunity for a more sportier model in the line-up for Fiat in Australia, so stay tuned,” said McLellan.
We will.
