Weighs 1,200 kg
Following an announcement
made at the beginning of this month, Opel has unveiled the Astra TCR racecar.
Set
to compete in the TCR (Touring Car Racing)
Series, Opel's track-only Astra is being co-developed with Kissling
Motorsport and is obviously based on the latest generation five-door
hatchback, but in
race guise it weighs only 1,200 kg (2,645 lbs) and looks absolutely
fierce with
the newly developed body kit which has been aerodynamically optimized.
It has
an adjustable front splitter along with a rear spoiler while the
stopping power
comes from 378 mm disc brakes matched with six-piston calipers for the
front
axle and 265 mm discs at the back coupled to two-piston calipers.
Under the hood resides a race-spec four-cylinder, 2.0-liter
turbocharged gasoline engine pushing out 330 PS (243 kW) and a peak torque of
420 Nm (310 lb-ft). The motor's output is channeled to the front wheels with
help from a six-speed gearbox equipped with paddles mounted on the steering
wheel.
The 2016 Astra TCR will feature a fully adjustable chassis
and Opel's latest developments in damper technology. Like all racecars destined
to compete in the TCR Series, the Astra doesn't have electronic assistance
systems like ABS and EBD. It has been fitted with a 100-liter fuel safety tank
which will become mandatory in the competition starting with the 2017 racing
season.
Customer teams willing to pay €95,000 (plus VAT) will start
getting the cars from late February next year.
