High-quality imagery with Audi e-tron quattro concept shows the Q6’s electric future

Audi Forum Neckarsulm recently had on exhibition the e-tron quattro concept originally unveiled at last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
Volkswagen Group’s TDI future looks grim at this point, so it’s a good idea that its premium marque Audi is focusing on all-electric powertrains. The company has announced its intentions of coming out with a pure EV at the beginning of 2018 and this concept is an early look at the first ever Q6 which will employ a new type of battery developed with LG Chem and Samsung SDI that will have enough juice for a 500+ km range.
The concept was 4.88 meters long, 1.93 meters wide and 1.54 meters tall, so we expect the production car to have roughly the same size. The design will be heavily influenced by the e-tron quattro concept seen here and chances are the Q6 will be one of the most aerodynamic models in its class if we take into account the concept’s body had a drag coefficient of 0.25.
It’s certainly an interesting appearance with that relatively low roofline and a sharp body combined with plastic cladding around the wheel arches and side skirts while those futuristic-looking lighting clusters make the concept look special. It’s the same story with the interior cabin packed with touchscreen displays replacing just about all conventional buttons and knobs.
We are curious to see whether the production car will be able to do a complete recharge of the battery pack in just 50 minutes like the concept which also makes use of contactless induction charging aka Audi Wireless Charging technology.
It’s too early to say what will power the Q6, but the concept had three electric motors with a combined permanent output of 435 PS (320 kW) and a peak power of 503 PS (370 kW) and more than 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) with the overboost function activated. This was enough for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in just 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h) which was electronically limited likely to prolong the longevity of the batteries.
A near-production version of Audi’s “luxury-class sport SUV” is probably on the agenda ahead of the Q6’s reveal likely set for the second half of 2017.
