Chevrolet has introduced at SEMA today a supercharged 1970 Camaro RS to showcase the new LT4 crate engine.
Modern underpinnings wrapped around in beautiful classic body represent a dream come true and Chevrolet has done just that by taking the Corvette Z06’s LT4 crate engine and inserting it into a ’70 Camaro RS which as a consequence now packs 650 bhp (485 kW) at 6,400 rpm and 650 lb-ft (880 Nm) of torque at 3,600 rpm. The aluminum V8 6.2-liter supercharged engine is teamed up to a T-56 Super Magnum six-speed manual gearbox while the suspension setup has been upgraded to an independent front layout and a four-link rear arrangement.
It has also received a rack-and-pinion steering system and shiny 19-inch polished alloy wheels backed by the Corvette Z06’s brakes. Chevrolet applied a Hyper Blue Metallic exterior paint scheme like the one offered on the latest Camaro and in this application it has been combined with white rally stripes. Other changes include the adoption of LED headlights and taillights, along with a six-point roll cage, special instrument cluster and custom-trimmed seats borrowed from a third generation Camaro.
The bad news is the Camaro RS concept will remain simply a one-off as it was created only to promote Chevrolet’s LT4 crate engine.
