Italian Miata is almost here
Fiat's 124 Spider revival has been caught on camera in all
its glory without any sort of disguise.
This pre-production prototype was spotted participating in
an official photo shoot near Santa Barbara in California and it's easy to see
the cute little roadster is based on the latest generation Mazda MX-5. Compared
to the Miata, FCA's version comes with tweaked front and rear fascia that look
more square as a throwback to the original 1966 Fiat 124 Spider designed by
Pininfarina.
The cabin clearly shows the car's roots even more and this
is actually a good thing as the new Miata has been praised for its top notch
interior quality and it should be the same story with the Fiat-badged model.
While this car has an automatic gearbox, Fiat will offer the
new
124 Spider with a six-speed manual transmission as well. Chances are the
base model will use a 1.4-liter turbo engine with around 180 bhp (134 kW) while the
hotter Abarth
version - set to come out next year - is set to employ a beefier 1.75-liter unit and a DCT borrowed from the Alfa Romeo 4C.
The standard Fiat 124 Spider will be officially revealed
before the year's end, with the Los Angeles Auto Show in November being the
most probable venue for a proper introduction.
