Spyshots: Citroen C4 Picasso Cross with Raised Suspension

Spyshots: Citroen C4 Picasso Cross with Raised Suspension
Our spy photographers stationed in Southern Europe have just sent us photos of a Citroen C4 Cactus being tested with raised suspension and offroad-inspired body cladding.

While the current MPV model is offered in two body styles, a jacked up version has never existed before. The formula used would be somewhat similar to the old Volkswagen Crossgolf, combining the practicality of a minivan with the go-anywhere attitude of a crossover.

Citroen already has two C4 models with raised suspension. There's the C4 Cactus, which is a supermini crossover similar to the Peugeot 2008, and the C4 Aircross, which is more like a small SUV sharing its underpinnings with the Mitsubishi ASX. The French firm also launched a Cross model based on the C4 Tourer recently, a direct rival to the Passat Alltrack and Opel Insignia Country Tourer.

Some have suggested the Picasso test mule in our photos is actually a prototype for the next Peugeot 3008. However, we think the bodywork doesn't back up this idea, since the cladding for the wheel arches looks ready for production.

However, the prototype appears to be front-wheel drive. Forgoing the all-wheel drive optional altogether would make sense, since most customers ignore it anyway and the relatively small engines of the C4 Picasso would hinder performance.

Even though it's based on the very flexible EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform), the C4 Picasso Cross will likely not feature any type of all-wheel drive system, at least not one that directly links the engine to the rear wheels. Instead, Citroen could choose to continue development of its hybrid tech and power the rear wheels using electricity like on the DS5 and Peugeot 508 RXH HYbrid4.

We'll likely have to wait until late 2015 to find out if Picasso has been able to learn new painting tricks.
