2013-'15 Audi A4, S4 and Allroad Recalled for Airbag Problem

HERNDON, Virginia — Audi of America is recalling 101,900 2013-'15 Audi A4, S4 and Allroad vehicles because a software problem may prevent the front airbags from deploying in a crash, the automaker told Edmunds on Thursday.
"In rare cases, it is possible that the front airbags in the affected vehicles may not deploy in a crash as designed, due to an improper algorithm/coding within the airbag control module," Audi said in a statement. "Front-seat occupants may not have the intended protection from the frontal airbag system in a secondary impact, putting them at risk for injury."
There have been no reports of accidents or injuries linked to the recall.
Takata is not the airbag supplier, according to Brad Stertz, an Audi of America spokesman. Approximately 7.8 million vehicles in the U.S. with defective Takata airbags have been recalled because they may explode metal pieces at vehicle occupants, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Stertz said Audi does not have a contract with Japanese supplier Takata.
Stertz said that while the affected Audis are "safe to drive," he added: "Consumers need to get their car inspected and have the software update ASAP."
The problem was discovered during routine quality assurance testing, he said.
The recall begins October 24. Audi dealers will update the software. Owners can contact Audi of America at 1-800-822-2834.
This is part of a larger global recall of about 850,000 Audi vehicles.
No information about this latest Audi recall had been posted on the Web site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as of Friday morning.
