Only 20 units to be made
Caterham is rolling out a Superlight Twenty special edition
to celebrate 20 years since the original Superlight went on sale.
Introduced back in 1996, the first Superlight was built in
around 200 examples before being retired in 2004 and now Caterham is launching
an anniversary edition which they say comes with a similar spec sheet. Only 20
units will be made and all will have a Ford Sigma 1.6-liter engine pushing out
135 bhp (101 kW) sent to the wheels through a six-speed close-ratio gearbox
and a limited-slip differential.
The hardware setup is good enough for a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h)
run in as little as 4.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 122 mph (196
km/h).
It also has the sport suspension pack and numerous carbon
fiber body parts such as the nose, cycle wings, aero screen and the rear wings.
Caterham opted for a bare aluminum body in the same vein as the original
Superlight and this lack of paint has lowered the weight by 6 kg (13.2 lbs).
Other special features include an individually numbered
plaque mounted on the dashboard, along with bespoke gauges and Superlight
Twenty motif applied onto the gear knob and the key. The chassis has been
painted in titanium while on the inside there are carbon panels along with
unique carbon embroidered seats sourced from the range-topping Seven 620 R.
Since Caterham wanted to make the car as light as possible
(starts at 498 kg), the options list is very short as customers will only be
able to add a heater, weather equipment and paint. The order books are already open and pricing starts at £29,995.
