Peugeot has taken the wraps off the 308 R HYbrid model.
Following the 308 R concept from 2013, the French marque is ready with a new hardcore version of its hatchback. The “ultimate 308” shares some of its design cues with the Quartz concept, featuring aggressive styling with widened fenders, 19-inch wheels, large air intakes and a distinctive blue-black paint job.
At the heart of the 308 R HYbrid is a plug-in powertrain, combining three sources of power, each capable of moving the vehicle independently of the others. They are a four-cylinder 1.6-liter THP petrol engine and two electric motors – each with power of 115 PS (85 kW), mounted one on each axle, thus providing a four-wheel drive. The total output of the system is rated at 500 PS (368 kW) and 730 Nm (539 lb-ft) of torque.
Peugeot says the result is “a family hatchback which is capable of supercar performance”. Translating this into numbers, the 308 R HYbrid can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standing start in 4.0 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). CO2 emissions are rated at 70 g/km.

The super hatch features four driving modes. The Hot Lap unleashes the full potential of the hybrid system. The Track mode delivers 400 PS (294 kW) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft) mainly from the petrol engine, while the Road mode is specially designed for road use with power of 300 PS (220 kW) and torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). The ZEV makes priority use of the rear electric motor, while the front electric motor comes into play, depending on the pressure applied on the accelerator pedal.
