Goes on sale this fall

BMW has announced the X5 xDrive40e will go on sale this fall at a starting price of €68,400 in Germany.
This makes it slightly more expensive than the xDrive40d (€66,300) and is aimed towards those want an efficient plug-in hybrid SAV that promises to return 69.1 - 71.2 mpg US (83.1 - 85.6 mpg UK or 3.4 - 3.3 liters / 100 km) while EPA's preliminary tests show a 55 MPGe result. It will do that by combining a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine with an electric motor, an 8-speed Steptronic and a 9 kWh lithium-ion battery.
The combustion engine is good enough for 245 PS (180 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) whereas the electric motor develops 113 PS (83 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft). This enables a combined output of 313 PS (230 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) which is sufficient for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) task in 6.8 seconds and a 130 mph (210 km/h) top speed that has been electronically limited.
With the battery pack fully charged, the BMW X5 xDrive40e should be able to cover as much as 19 miles (31 km) running solely on electric power during which it can hit 75 mph (120 km/h). A complete recharge takes 3 hours and 50 minutes from a household socket and 2 hours and 45 minutes when using the optional BMW i Wallbox.
It will go on sale this fall once BMW will kick off production at the Spartanburg factory in South Carolina where they put together a variety of X-badged models.
