Silverstone
Auctions’ sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show on the
15th of November will be your chance to buy one of the rarest Mercedes’
ever produced. We are talking about a 1970 Mercedes 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet
in black with a V8 engine. Mouthwatering, innit?
Now, an untrained eye may recognize this Benz as the car from The Hangover
movie. But this one’s a lot cooler, and rarer, than that 220SE. For
starters, It’s a V8 280 model, and it’s a right-hand drive floor mounted
automatic. Only 68 Cabrio 280s were ever produced in this spec.
This Mercedes 280SE was first registered
in the UK in the 70s, until 11 years ago when it exported to Australia.
There it went under a five-year meticulous, and hugely expensive, full
restoration in Brisbane, and is now back in the Blighty in concours
condition looking for a new owner.
Back in its days, Mercedes 280SE
Cabriolet was known as “the finest automobile in the world”. It has a
powerful V8, sumptuous looks, a prestigious badge, and impeccable
quality. And of course it was a convertible which made it doubly
desirable.
The auctioneers have not released an
estimate for this car, but they did say the restoration alone has cost
over $200,000, and that the more abundant left-hand drive models have
topped $425,000 in auctions. So whatever it is, the cost of this Benz is
over half a million dollars.
